Driver Vehicle Inspection ReportDVIR
A required pre-trip and post-trip inspection report a commercial driver fills out documenting the vehicle's condition.
A DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report) is required by 49 CFR 396.11 and 396.13. Drivers must inspect the vehicle before driving (pre-trip) and after the day's run (post-trip), and document any defects that would affect safety or could lead to a mechanical breakdown.
Items typically inspected include service brakes, parking brake, steering mechanism, lights and reflectors, tires, horn, windshield wipers, mirrors, coupling devices, wheels and rims, and emergency equipment.
If the post-trip DVIR notes any defect, the carrier must repair the defect (or certify it doesn't affect safe operation) before the vehicle is dispatched again. Modern fleets file DVIRs digitally — a defect can auto-generate a maintenance work order.
